Study Director - Biofilm Specialist post available

BluTest has extensive experience of delivering biofilm services since 2004. We work with many leading companies and institutions to provide biofilm studies. There is an opening for a outstanding, dynamic and experienced scientist to join our established team as study director in biofilm studies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide in-depth technical support in respect develop and test complex biofilms using a range of important pathogenic bacteria and fungi on clinically relevant substrates in order to assess a range of important ‘actives’ and formulations from industry, using a range o standard and bespoke models.
2. Provide in-depth knowledge, solutions, and advice relating to biofilm testing platforms, model development and assessing quantitative and qualitative data.
3. Monitor technical standards, advise, implement and evaluate improvements to existing protocols relevant as required.
4. Develop, test and construct new systems and/or techniques.
5. Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate data records are kept and databases are updated accordingly. Present findings accurately.
6. Manage projects in liaison with clients and be responsible for accurate project delivery.
7. Plan and organise day to day work to ensure that studies are delivered to our clients within previously agreed timescales.
8. To advise, instruct, train and provide guidance to other staff
9. Have responsibility for stock levels, consumables and supplies, within budget, and in consultation with management.
10. Ensuring that all Health and Safety paperwork is completed timeously and recorded accurately, and implementing and adhering to health and safety policies, as determined by the Company and the Health and Safety Executive.
11. Where required, supervise staff and delegate and allocate work to junior colleagues, monitoring progress and performance.
12. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions
13. Keep up to date with advancements in technology and methodology, continually updating technical knowledge. Work in collaboration with University colleagues.
The above duties are not exhaustive and the postholder will be required to undertake any other relevant duties as required by the company

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
Al. BSc (Hons) Degree or equivalent in Microbiology
A2: Detailed technical knowledge of microbial biofilms.
A3: Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation.
Desirable:
B1. PhD in biofilm-related research area, with at least two years post-doctoral experience OR BSc Degree or equivalent in Microbiology with at least five years of relevant experience.
B2. Experience of working under an accredited QA laboratory environment.
Skills

Cl. Well developed technical expertise in handling pipettes and microorganisms.
C2. IT skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office programmes and proficient user of specialist software packages.

D1. Ability to grow, maintain and analyse, using state of the art techniques, multi-species biofilms.
Experience
Essential:
E1. Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous professional development
E2: Experience of working in an academic and/or industrial setting
Desirable:
F1. Experience of interacting and communicating with clients.

Dimensions
To contribute to the safe and well organised functioning of the microbiology team, To undertake experimental procedures of growing, maintaining and testing using complex biofilm models with active agents provided from our clients.
Planning and Organising:
Plan and organise a range of specialised technical support activities.
Effective organisation and time management to ensure that deadlines are met and priorities are well managed.
Organise and manage laboratory infrastructure and to respond to the day to day running requirements of the lab.
Collaboration and interaction with CEO/management and clients
Decision Making:
Perform laboratory experiments and exercise initiative and judgement to make decisions on a day-to-day basis in relation to experimental SOPs..
Provide input into decisions on experimental approaches.
Assist the Lab Manager with the logistics of day to day running of the laboratory.
Make decisions about working safely and minimising risks.
Internal/External Relationships:
Be responsible for liaising with external clients/collaborators on projects as required.
Problem Solving:
React to technical queries and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
Provide technical and logistical solutions relating to equipment and experiments.
Use initiative and judgement to resolve problems within own knowledge base, referring to academic staff when necessary.
Review and implement refinements to procedures in order to maximise efficiency.
Other:
The post holder may have to undertake work at evenings and occasional weekends to ensure continuity and delivery of studies for which they are responsible.
