SARS-CoV-2 is a betacoronavirus for which we now require to take measures in order to be ready to effectively contain this virus. Hand and surface disinfection is an important part of that response though the use of medicated hand rubs/wipes and surface disinfectants to reduce transmission of the virus. We do not yet fully understand the mode of transmission of the virus, which could be through contact with contaminated surfaces and/or airborne. Coronaviruses are generally considered to have low resistance to disinfection, which is similar to bacteria. Most disinfectant products when used effectively should be capable of removing potential contamination with the virus from hands and surfaces.

To Manufacturers for disinfectant products making claims against coronavirus.

For each formulation:

The minimum requirement for a claim is a pass to EN 14476:2013 + A2 2019 or EN 14476: 2013 + A1 2015 (hand products) against vaccinia virus (at less than 2 minutes for hand products and less than 5 minutes for surface products). This covers all enveloped viruses including all coronaviruses. Products currently with at least a supported antibacterial claim should be capable of passing this standard.

A pass against EN 14476:2013, EN 14476:2013 + A1 2015, EN 14476:2013 + A2 2019 to either limited spectrum virucidal activity or full virucidal activity allows a claim against SARS-CoV-2. A pass against or EN 16777:2018 fully supports these claims. A pass against EN 14675:2015 also gives confidence in a claim for efficacy against this virus. A pass against a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus, ideally another betacoronavirus to ASTM E1052-11 or ASTM E1053-97(2002) is also the basis of a claim.

BluTest has set up a fast-track for testing products to EN 14476:2013 + A2 2019 vaccinia virus to enable claims for efficacy to be made against SARS-CoV-2 virus. In addition, we can test against the closely related surrogate betacoronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus, to EN 14476:2013 + A2 2019 or ASTM E1052/E1053.
